Spotlight: 97-Year Old John Deere Dealer

I have a new goal.

To be like Joe. Joe who? Joe Colgan of Wyoming, IL. Last week on my way down to the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, KY I stopped in Wyoming, IL for a kitchen table video interview with 97-year old Joe Colgan and his son Tim Colgan. Tim just retired after a long successful career with John Deere.

Joe? He went to work for Deere in 1933. From 1937-1947 he was a traveling territory man for Deere in central Illinois. In 1947 he bought into the local Deere dealership in Wyoming, IL. Sharp as a tac at 97, it was a pleasure to sit and visit with Joe and Tim about how the farm equipment business has changed over the years and decades.

Joe talks about taking used horses in on trade in the 1930′s. He talks about the change from corn pickers to combines. He talks about the days when dealers had no money and special order parts were delivered COD to the local post office. He shares with us the year his total Deere sales were $100,000…and how that was plenty to make a living and raise their 12 kids.

I posted the video interview in (3) parts. In part 3, Joe’s wife of 70 years (70!), Majella Colgan, joins us at the kitchen table and talks about what it was like to raise 12 kids. Yep, 12, an even dozen little Colgans. Now the Colgans number 85 kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

So much to learn I think from those who have gone ahead of us and blazed the trail. Folks like 97-year old Deere dealer Joe Colgan of Wyoming, IL.

Here’s part (3) of the video interview:

John Deere Construction Vehicles

When you hear the name John Deere, you probably think of machinery made for agriculture. However, Deere has been making construction equipment since 1947 and now carries an impressive line of products for the construction market. They are known for their powerful excavators and a new product form to the industry – the high speed dozer – which gets the job done up to twice as fast as traditional dozers. Rather than rambling on about it, we have compiled a few photos so you can see them in action!

Low Hour Deere Tractors on Nebraska & Iowa Auctions

This tractor up for sale on February 11, 2011 farm retirement auction in Inwood, IA

Time for a road trip.

I’m heading to Bellwood, Nebraska for a super farm retirement auction Thursday, February 10th and then on to another farm retirement auction Friday, February 11th in Inwood, Iowa. What about these two auctions is calling me to hit the road?

Very low hour, one owner, John Deere tractors in exceptional condition.

The auction in Bellwood, NE Feb. 10th has a 1999 JD 8100 MFWD tractor with only 1,191 hours. Also on this sale is a 2004 JD 7420 2WD tractor with just 1,100 hours and a 2001 JD 7710 2WD tractor with 1,904 hours. Here’s a preview video I posted in our Machinery Pete Youtube channel on this auction:

Aren’t those beautiful tractors? With such low hours, I’m guessing they will approach record high auction sale prices. Definitely a premium being paid the last 8 months at auction to acquire the very nice condition used tractors like these.

The farm auction Friday in Inwood, IA has even lower hour used Deere tractors, including a 2005 JD 7820 MFWD with 560 hours, a 2000 JD 9100 4WD with 750 hours and a 2003 JD 7520 MFWD with 1,290 hours selling with a 2003 JD 741 loader. One more super nice Deere tractor on this auction: a 2005 JD 6220 with open station and 570 hours.

I’ll be posting video highlights from both these farm auctions, so check back.

Interim Tier 4 101: Key Terms to Know

This excerpt was originally posted on the John Deere, Straightforward Blog

As conversations around emissions regulations continue, it’s important to be able to “talk the talk.” Following is our glossary of terms commonly used when speaking about emissions, broken down in your language to help you better understand the new IT4 requirements and their impact.

Interim Tier 4 (IT4) – fourth stage in the emissions regulation for new, non-road diesel engines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for North America. This reduces particulate matter by 90 percent along with a 50 percent drop in NOx compared to Tier 3.

Final Tier 4 – final stage in the emissions regulations for new, non-road diesel engines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for North America that take effect in as early as 2014. Final Tier 4 requires further reduction of PM by 80 percent.

Particulate Matter (PM) – also known as “soot” or “smoke” is a non-gaseous product of combustion. It is essentially an incomplete combustion of diesel fuel.

Nitrogen Oxide – or NOx, contributes to the formation of atmospheric pollution. It interacts with other chemicals and sunlight to form ground-level ozone, commonly referred to as “smog.”

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) – an alternate emissions control strategy to reduce NOx when combined with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). The SCR system lowers NOx while the DOC reduces PM.

Cooled EGR – As its name implies, cooled EGR cools and mixes measured amounts of exhaust gas with incoming fresh air to lower the engine amp;rsquo;s peak combustion temperature, thereby reducing NOxto an acceptable level. Exhaust gases are routed through an exhaust filter, consisting of a DOC and diesel particulate filter (DPF). Particulate matter is trapped in the filter and—through a process called passive regeneration, which utilizes normal engine exhaust temperatures—the PM is oxidized into nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide, then expelled through the exhaust pipe. Cooled EGR paired with an exhaust filter requires less operator involvement and is a simpler, proven, fuel-efficient, and less-costly technology compared to alternative solutions. This is what our customers told us they want.

Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) – The DOC is part of the exhaust filter that reduces carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and some PM.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – The DPF traps and holds particulates remaining in the exhaust stream. Trapped particulates are eventually oxidized within the DPF through regeneration.

Interim Tier 4 101: How we got here and what it means to you

This excerpt was originally posted on the John Deere, Straightforward Blog

Emissions regulations are a complex and dynamic subject, and even more so for off-highway equipment users who find themselves operating within a rapidly changing regulatory environment. As we move forward in 2011, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires new non-road diesel engines, such as those in excavators, loaders, and tractors, to meet stringent Interim Tier 4 (IT4) emissions regulations.

For diesel engines with 174 horsepower and above, these regulations require the following reductions from Tier 3 levels:

* 90-percent reduction in particulate matter
* 50-percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions

Education on new emissions requirements is crucial, but let’s first take a step back to understand how emission tiers for new diesel engines and equipment entered the landscape to bring some perspective to your path to compliance.

It All Began With the Clean Air Act of 1970

Today’s emissions regulations have their roots in the Clean Air Act of 1970, one of the most significant environmental laws in U.S. history, which created sweeping laws to reduce and control air pollution. Among other air pollutants, the Clean Air Act addresses particulate matter (PM, known as “soot”) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Nitrogen oxide reacts with sunlight and other substances in the atmosphere to create ground-level ozone, otherwise known as “smog,” and come from many sources, including diesel engines.

The EPA’s “Tier” Emissions Standards: A Result of the Clean Air Act

In an effort to reduce and control these PM and NOx emissions, the Clean Air Act required the EPA to establish and enforce rigorous emissions requirements for all new non-road diesel engines starting in 1996. These requirements are what we have come to know as the “Tier” emissions standards.

Tiers 1-4: Where We Began & Where We’re Headed

The following graph visually portrays this tiered approach from Tier 1, which set limits on PM and NOx emissions, to Final Tier 4, which will take full effect in 2014 and requires further reduction of PM by 80 percent.

EPA and EU nonroad emissions1.9.11 post1 Interim Tier 4 101: How we got here and what it means to you

2011 marks the beginning of the move to Interim Tier 4 (IT4), which requires a significant reduction in PM and NOx emissions, unquestionably the most significant step in the regulation process to date. Keep yourself informed and check back often as we dig deeper into these regulations and the impact they will have on your business.

Farmer Buys New JD 8225R Tractor, Offered More $$ to Sell!

Machinery Pete Talking Used Equipment in Marshall, MN January 26, 2011

JD8225R NebraskaDealer Farmer Buys New JD 8225R Tractor, Offered More $$ to Sell!

Machinery Pete says the tractor market is on fire

Call it instant appreciation.

I heard a remarkable story last week. I was on a fun trek of 6 speaking gigs in 6 days. Last Monday – Friday I was part of the Linder Farm Network’s “Ag Tour” of five Minnesota cities. Along with experts on Chinese agriculture and commodities analysts, I did my part by speaking about current trends in the used farm equipment market.

After my talk last Wednesday (Jan. 26th) in Marshall, MN a local farmer came up to visit. He said he and his father had recently purchased a new John Deere 8225R tractor from a regional Deere dealer. The tractor was delivered and sat in their machinery shed for a few weeks, still unused. The phone rings. It’s the dealer they just bought the 8225R tractor from.

The dealer offered to buy the 8225R back for more money than he just sold it to them for!

Very interesting times in the farm equipment market I guess you could say. That would be the biggest understatement ever. I’ve been documenting record high auction sale prices on all makes, sizes and age of used tractors like crazy since November 2010. Record prices falling right and left, all around North America.

But obviously the very strong buyer demand isn’t limited to the used tractor market, it’s just as intense with new tractor sales as well. Interesting times indeed.

John Deere And Ag Council Partners Again For National Ag Day

John Deere announced that it will again partner with the Agriculture Council of America to sponsor National Agriculture Day.  The celebration takes place in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, March 15th.

2011NatAgDay John Deere And Ag Council Partners Again For National Ag Daycredit

The National Agriculture Day program was developed to increase awareness of production agriculture and encourage the public to:

  • Understand how food and fiber products are produced
  • Appreciate the role farmers and ranchers play in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
  • Value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy.
  • Understand the need for production agriculture to feed and fuel a growing global population.
  • Acknowledge and consider career opportunities in the agriculture, food and fiber industry.

LSH6373 John Deere And Ag Council Partners Again For National Ag Daycredit

Barry Nelson, manager of media relations, had this to say about John Deere and National Ag Day.  “Ag Day was created to recognize and celebrate the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives. This year, on March 15, high-profile events will be held in Washington, D.C., for legislators, government officials, and industry leaders to focus public attention on the important role that farmers and ranchers play in providing an abundant, safe, and affordable supply of food, fuel and fiber.”

So what exactly does John Deere contribute to National Ag Day?  Being a sponsor allows Deere to not only create public service announcements and other educational programs, but they also sponsor students so that they go attend the program on March 15.  John Deere sponsors many students who are members of FFA, 4H, AFA, the Consortium, and student NAMA.  With Deere’s sponsorship, these students will meet with legislators, attend a mix-and-mingle luncheon, and attend numerous special events throughout the program.  Deere recognizes that these young students are the future of America as well as their own organization.  By providing these students with this opportunity, it allows them to gain further insight into the industry and maybe some day in the future that student will develop a concept or piece of machinery that will change the industry forever.(Source)
